About the Course

This workshop will introduce participants to core workflows of urban planning, urban design, and landscape design that leverage GIS for processes such as: 3D site context creation, site analysis, zoning, schematic design, scenario comparison and impact assessment, design development, and community engagement.

A short initial presentation will provide a brief overview of how GIS can support planning and design projects. This part will introduce the main Esri GIS solutions that can support planning and design workflows, and it will highlight the role of the set of GIS solutions that we will explore in the hands-on portion of the workshop.

The first part of the hands-on portion will teach leveraging basic online solutions for 3D context creation, site analysis, zoning and massing, and output metrics and scenario comparison. Key solutions that we will use are Analytics in ArcGIS Online, the Living Atlas, and ArcGIS Urban.

The second part of the workshop will focus on desktop solutions for design advancement and interoperability with Rhino 3D. Here we will leverage ArcGIS CityEngine and Puma for Rhino, a CityEngine plug-in for Grasshopper and Rhino. The last portion will teach how to publish back online the work, and how to leverage online solutions for community engagement. In this part we will use ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Hub (online) and ArcGIS Survey 123 (online).

Agenda:

Presentation Part:

  • Brief overview of how GIS can be leveraged for design and planning.

  • Introduction key GIS solutions and workflows for urban design and planning.

  • Deeper introduction to solutions we will be using in the workshop.

Hands-on Part:

  • Hands-on exercise 1: ArcGIS Online for Analytics, 3D Context in Living Atlas, and setting up an ArcGIS Urban model.

  • Hands-on exercise 2: Zoning, massing, and scenario comparison in ArcGIS Urban.

  • Hands-on exercise 3: Leveraging CityEngine and Puma for Grasshopper/Rhino for design development.

  • Hands-on exercise 4: ArcGIS Online solutions for community engagement.

Requirements & Prerequisites:

All Esri software and data will be provided. ArcGIS Online student accounts will also be provided with access to the online solutions we will use. Participants will need to bring their own laptops and have Rhino/Grasshopper installed for exercise 3.

There are no GIS prerequisites for this workshop. Basic knowledge of navigating Rhino will be useful.
